How to Write Dates in British English
Subtle Differences in Date Writing
The format for writing dates in British English differs slightly from that used in American English. Here's a breakdown of the rules:
Day-Month-Year
In British English, dates are written in the day-month-year order. For example, the 4th of July 2023 would be written as 4 July 2023.
Day-Month Abbreviation-Year
For brevity, you can abbreviate the month using its first three letters. For instance, the date mentioned earlier could also be written as 4 Jul 2023.
Ordinal Numbers for Days
When writing the day of the month, use ordinal numbers. The 1st is written as 1st, the 2nd as 2nd, and so on.
Capitalization of Months and Days
In British English, the names of months and days of the week are always capitalized. This rule applies even when the date is written in abbreviated form.
Using "of" for Inclusive Dates
When specifying a period that includes both the start and end dates, use the word "of" before the second date. For example, "From the 1st of January of 2023 to the 31st of December of 2023" indicates the entire year 2023.
