Barça hosted Bayern in the first leg of the Champions League quarter finals at the Camp Nou and put in a spectacular and efficient performance to sweep aside the German champions. The win leaves Josep Guardiola's men in a commanding position ahead of the return leg in Munich next week.
Barça started brightly and took the lead after just nine minutes. Lionel Messi played a one-two with Samuel Eto'o before slotting the ball past Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The visitors had few chances to respond, with Barça's defence looking solid. The home side doubled their lead midway through the first half when Eto'o headed in a cross from Xavi. Bayern improved after the break, but they were unable to find a way past Barça's resolute defence. The home side added two more goals in the final 20 minutes, with Thierry Henry scoring a stunning solo effort and Messi completing his brace.
The win was a resounding success for Barça, who will now be confident of reaching the semi-finals. Bayern, on the other hand, will need to produce a miracle in the second leg if they are to progress.
